Formerly known as Berlin from 1914-1916, the name Kitchener was chosen as an homage to Herbert Kitchener, a Secretary of State during the First World War. German culture is honoured during Kitchener-Waterloo’s Oktoberfest, one of the biggest festivals to take place in the city.
